Sep 22, 2009:( I updated this morn. And after the update I cant activate the resident shield.Heres what Ive tried going in clicking un clicking then saving. Just re-installed AVG on new m/c Win XP. The Resident Shield does not stay on as it used to on my old m/c Win 98SE. I have to activate it every time (if I can remember). ![]() ![]() Glad I could help. To the Crazy One: I've been running AVG for two years on my machine and never gotten a single virus. ![]() Of course, I use online scans on occassion to make sure that everything is running clean and they always come back saying I'm uninfected. Not sure but it may because I'm very careful with my computer habbits: I clear my cache constantly, run a virus and spyware scan everyday, and do a diskclenup whenever I shutdown the PC. Not only that but I also don't download stuff from website I haven't researched and I don't execute any programs I download or recive until I've scanned them. It may be obsessive but I haven't had a single virus on this WDC hard disk, ever. Website: May 21, 2004, 04:21pm EDT - - - Re: AVG (free version) Resident Shield won't stay active.Must activate every time. 'don't use AVG' is not an idea, it's an instruction, and one with which I disagree. To propose piracy as an alternative is not exactly clever I use AVG and recommend it to others. While it may not be the best out there, _any_ antivirus is better than none. Having said that, vhich antivirus you have is less important than how up-to-date you keep it. Also, most modern virii, trojans and worms attack unpatched systems - so keeping your system patched is a must, along with installing a good spyware killer - I recommend those old faithfuls Ad-aware and Spybot S&D, both free. Prang Who is. Oh, never mind May 22, 2004, 01:30pm EDT - - - Re: AVG (free version) Resident Shield won't stay active.Must activate every time. Gotta say that AVG is the best 'free' downloadable virus scanner out there - I used it for a couple of years and only changed over to Trend Internet Security Suite because it had a bundled firewall - I recommend AVG to everyone who's looking for a good free scanner. I guess it's what you are used to and also what works best with your comp - I personnally hate NAV as I had a bad time trying to get it to run on a past machine and when I did, I couldn't believe how much resources it used! Find the best for you and stick to it. Safe & secure surfin' to all! Incoming mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus (). Version: 7.0.Pro 245 / Virus Database: 262.10.3 - Release Date: Yes I agree that AVG free version is a good start, but if you want one of its fully featured versions as above.then pay the few £ or $ and get the auto daily updates. ![]() And through the day occasionally you will get the Priority Updates, often in advance of other (also good virus) Programs). Like Michael I have had it for many years and it puts any supect viruses in the Virus Vault. The support site is also first class, Adware and Spybot, and my Router Firewall have kept my 2 d/Tops, and 1 Laptop free with ample warning of any spurious attacks.(don't mention crack's most of the sites are full of 'self inflicted'unwanted links) Keep up the good work Best Wishe to you all Victor All forces are equal and opposite May 29, 2004, 10:00am EDT - - - Edited: May 29, 2004, 10:03am EDT Re: AVG (free version) Resident Shield won't stay active.Must activate every time. (apologies, I forgot to register, & the heading posted on its own). I have this problem in XP, but it only arose after I had been at a meeting where there was a network provided, and I had to set (and later reset) network settings. The message that comes up is 'core not found winerr=02' (or maybe 002). When I boot, it stops in midstream, and eventually the message pops up.Then I have to start AVG, activate the resident checker etc. I have taken a look at the Registry entry for grisoft, and it appears to have?? At the front of the entry, which I would imagine means that it has lost its way. ![]() But, when I restart and do the bits, the software appears to work. I have noticed however that the scheduled system check doesn't activate, so maybe nothing is working? I am using Mailwasher 4.1, B9, Sygate personal firewall (4.1 is new, but going back to 4.0 didn't solve the problem). I also have this problem if I uninstal AVG! The same message comes up, and it is an AVG popup! (yes, I did remember to reboot after uninstalling). My question now is, can I edit the registry to fix the problem, or do I need to re-instal XP? I checked to see if I could restore to a point before the problem occurred, but I don't seem to have a recovery point going back that far. I'm not keen to touch the Registry unless I can get a step-by-keystroke guide, as I know my limitations and rely on this laptop totally. Jun 05, 2004, 12:34pm EDT - - - Re: AVG (free version) Resident Shield won't stay active.Must activate every time. Thanks Ecosse. I got a copy of Registry First Aid, but it was telling me that almost everything in the Registry was dud, and since everything is running ok once I get past boot-up, I didn't want to rock the boat. I think I might have cleaned up the AVG problem a different way. (uninstalling wasn't doing it - the message about Core being missing came up even with it uninstalled!). I have downloaded the free trial of Version 7, which seems to have removed all the references to V6. I'm hoping that if I decide not to buy V7, when I uninstal it, I can instal V6 cleanly. As of now, the laptop is booting ok. I might even keep version 7 & pay for it. Jun 12, 2004, 01:22pm EDT - - - Re: AVG (free version) Resident Shield won't stay active.Must activate every time.
